I knew it. He's shocked because... he didn't know.

Or rather, he wasn't allowed to know...

*grins, waits*

So much power in knowing your name...

...possibly your "True Name"?

If **** wasn't real by this point in the story, then **** definitely just got real.

Oh my... he didn't remember?! Is that why he's so shaken?! I was under the impression that there was no problem with his memories, hence all the brooding about growing up and keeping contracts... was his name taken from him and only memories of his regrets left?

Or maybe... he's been Beast for so long that he simply had forgotten. Oh man, I just made myself sad. :(

Maybe he thought she called him by name, and that's what shocked him.

That's what I'm thinking. That it's been so long since he's been called that and no one is supposed to know his name; especially not her.

Maybe the name is his.

Or maybe it's his mother's.

Time will tell.

I had that thought as well, that maybe his mother is the artist... I kinda hope not, I think the Beast drawing our chapter opening pages is far more romantic than if it was his mother. Also its really super painful to think that he's carrying around her old notebook.

Rereading earlier pages, I think the odds are strongly against it being his mother's, but I thought I'd add the outside chance.

oh, dearie me. This does not bode well. Names go with fey magic like snakes with hoodoo.

Yeah, that must be his name, then. The only question is, is he in shock because he could no longer remember his true name (his flashbacks never include his name and one's name and who possesses it has a lot of importance magically), or is he in shock because he thinks that Beauty is saying his name? Either way, he appears to be having some sort of flashback, if his shaking and that third panel - which shows the streaks on the table from the first panel, but looks like spattered blood in this one - are any indication. Poor Beast....
