Are they implying their mother left because of a rose? I thought she died?

I don't think she left. I think she sacrificed her life for Beauty's and the rose was maybe a reminder of this? It hasn't been fully explained yet, I think, but that's what I'm getting.

Now that I think of it... is it ever actually STATED that the mother died?!
In the prologue it says "When he returns and finds the mistress gone and the little one already buried? Kinder to tell him the fever took them both"
This could as well mean that she left and Beauty is dying and the servants would rather say the mother died, too, instead of confessing she went away.
Temperence also just says "Mom's gone" instead of "Mom's dead" when talking to her ill father.

It's been a while, so I may not be remembering this right, but I think the only one who has definitely said that their mother is dead was Beauty...and she was too young to actually know what happened. Goodness, though, are her sisters keeping secrets from her! This would seem to indicate that their mother just up and left (to make a contract to save Beauty's life, we know, but they don't) and that they thought it was kinder to lie to Beauty about that. Did they keep that from their father as well? Gosh, though, I could never see Beauty leaving them without a good reason...surely they feel that way as well? How bad was it back then that the thought of Beauty abandoning them is the "comforting" thought? How the plot thickens....
