hello, crowded page. This is basically The Castle as uncanny magical storage unit. And The Beast works there. He has a uniform with the name embroidered on, but everyone is pretty certain that's not his real name. He also works the night shift as a guard dog. He gets time-and-a-half for that. He always finishes the coffee and never remembers to put on a new pot, and other staff members suspect he just lives in one of the units.

Did I just invent Storage Unit AUs? I think I might have. I'm very, very tired.

Hmmmm... Beast's reflection looks a little different.
Also I will eventually draw fanart of said Storage Unit AU... One day.

Very nice touch, btw.

I guess it's purely coincidential that this page, with its talk of unfulfilled longings and ruinous bargains, went up on Black Friday.

Also, those unexamined appetites and inclinations are making me wonder (mainly because I have a filthy mind) to what extent Beast must fulfill these contracts after brokering them. It's not like there's anyone else present in the Castle...unless it's also a holodeck?

Oh dear, now I've started the BaTB Starfleet AU.

:) The Castle is a place no sane person wanders, where no one escapes unscathed... kind of like WalMart on Black Friday.

(aka that person who left the comment about the selkie wife a couple pages ago)

If that was Argus in the mirror, as opposed to the Beast, then I think that just broke my heart. And this might be me, but I'm not entirely sure what the object is in panel 6? (it has the dialogue "'Home' or 'love', 'escape'" over it)

It's a birdcage
Silver Lady 27th Nov 4:27 AM, 2015
Probably, Beast's deepest wish was to be free from his mother's claws. Well, she can't reach him there now.

Selkie wife - I might be mistaken but I think the object in panel 6 is an open bird cage, possibly in reference to the empty bird cages in another part of the castle and the birds the young Argus let free, which could also represent his own desire for freedom and love, as Silver Lady referenced.

Also, Beast/Argus is giving a nice long-winded explanation of sorts without any chest pains of "thou shall not speak"... Interesting... Either he is being cryptic enough to satisfy the "enforcer" or perhaps he is "safe" to speak the truth in this part of the castle?

Narnia4Aslan -thanks! I see it now, but it stumped me for a really long time :)

Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange: "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost."

Alphonse Elric's Corollary to the First Law of Equivalent Exchange: There's no such thing as equivalent exchange.

Man, I was a couple months (MONTHS!) behind on this comic. ALL THE THINGS!! I am loving the slow revealing of little bits of history and myth regarding how the castle works. UGH! So good. So many layers.

That doll made me think of the scene in Mulan, and feel feels.

That scene is super creepy and super sad realizing what the Huns are going to do

Can't help but remembering of Full Metal Alchemist's law of equivalent trade, at Beast's speech.

Or the deals people in Once Upon a Time did to Rumpelstiltskin, and that always backfired.

Magic always comes with a price dearie.

"To obtain, something of equal value must be lost." It's hard not to remember "Fullmetal Alchemist" while reading this page, but also "xxxHolic," considering just how much the castle has to offer. It seems like anything is possible here, though of course it comes with a price.

Too bad Beauty doesn't look into the mirror to see the Beast's true face. It makes sense that that's what could be seen in the mirror, though, since I'm sure the Beast would like to be human again. The fact that there's a bed in that same room definitely make me raise my eyebrows - the suggestiveness of the castle continues!

We also we have a birdcage on the floor, with all of the desires named in that panel coinciding with what the boy Argus wanted. Which makes me wonder, does the panel on the other side of it represent the desires that the adult Argus, before being cursed, had, which then led to his undoing?
