That expression is so neutral, I could calibrate pH meters with it. That expression is so neutral that it makes Switzerland look like the Klingon Empire. That expression is so neutral it has its own alignment/morality grid. And it will drive me mad until Friday.

Are you reminiscing, Beast? Resigned? Pleased with this memory, perturbed by it, pained from it? TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR FUZZY HEAD, BEAST, OR WE WILL TICKLE YOU INTO COMPLIANCE

I would love to see a drawing of Beauty tickling Beast until he's rolling on the floor laughing. :)

Strong enough for a man, pH balanced for a beast...

Is this going to lead conversation round to a certain dark-haired woman, who looks and awful lot like Beauty? I think it might. Also I think I might have to go back and reread the passages where she speaks/is mentioned making the bargain, in light of this new information.

Loving the first panel as well - you can really get a sense of how *big* the castle is there.

Oh, yeah! The Beast is talking about the deal he made with Beauty's mom to save Beauty's life. Elise! Bird-mom!

Once? Once?! Once! Gah! The ambiguity is unbearable. Good job at making this reader want to tear out her hair.

What's an equivalent exchange for a Beast with green thumbs, an adorable nose, a waggy tail, and great forearms?

Well, in Beauty's case, the price paid appears to have manifested as: a lifetime supply of boredom, broken only when you devise ingenious ways of wasting time; a whole lot of emotional turmoil, both your own and the Beast's; and never seeing your family again except as the Beast and the castle allows it.

...I think I understand what the Beast meant when he said that few find happiness in their bargains.

I get the feeling that his tone is that first panel is a touch triumphant. That final panel, in contrast, feels quiet and somber to me. I'm sure he's thinking about Beauty's mother here, considering what we saw in the inter-act - but of course, he can't tell Beauty that. Not yet, anyway.
