Ouchhh harsh on the rejection but at the same time. Better than her leading him on.

And ohhhhhh just extreme ouch right there, no wonder Argus had it rough. It also kinda explains why it wouldn't be a "allowed", I mean her wants aside. No king ever wants to share a mistress. At least thats what I've noticed.

Poor Argus life was not good to him.

Oh, so he IS a prince after all... for some reason I did not expect that to be the case in this version of the story. XD
Exasperated Dwarf 11th Oct 1:32 AM, 2016 edit delete reply
I have no idea why, considering it's in every BatB story I've ever read, but I was was kinda surprised he's a prince. Good job.

I am reminded of Indiana Jones III.
"How do you know she's a Nazi?"
"She talks in her sleep."
"...wha-"
"I was only as human as the next man, son."
"Dad, I WAS the next man!"

B*tch if you marry Argus, then you're marrying the future king!
I'm sorry, but I can't help but be mad at this lady, especially since I know that eventually this leads up to Argus becoming the beast.
Anon 11th Oct 4:39 PM, 2016 edit delete reply
I don't know if she's leading him to be. She probably is a factor, his home life probably wasn't helping him either.
Kawaii overload!!! 11th Oct 6:19 PM, 2016 edit delete reply
I'm not saying that she directly leads to Argus becoming the Beast. But it's possible that something revolving around her besides this might have. Perhaps maybe Argus's mother found out about the affair, did something bad to the lady, then possibly cursed Argus. That is, if Argus's mother is involved in his cursing at all.

Honestly, this is a terrible plan. Become the king's mistress, you're only around as long as he is. Marry the PRINCE, you can become queen.

But, you know, maybe poor Argus doesn't have a bid for the throne. There are obviously other factors at play here. Hopefully not "I secretly wanted to be with your father the whole time," which is kind of gross, but...

It's a possibility he's like an eighth son or something and never is going to be king. In any event, AWKWARD.
Bex 11th Oct 8:06 AM, 2016 edit delete reply
We don't actually know that he's going to inherit. It's likely that Argus's mother is a mistress herself, so if the king has had any children with his wife (the queen), Argus is unlikely to take the throne.
Viviane 11th Oct 8:09 AM, 2016 edit delete reply
Question is, is he the rightful heir prince or one of the children of one of the mistresses? No real safe sex back then

NO BUT WAIT

I was looking back through the comic, and in Act II, Chap 1, page 6, Bearded Father Figure declares himself as such "You've no father to tell you better, so it falls to me"

since Argus was He of the Duck Tailed Haircut in the flashback, does this mean his mother then remarried into the crown? So Old Love Interest here may be looking to get Argus' STEP-father, and Argus just calls him Dad?

Or the King was a super un-involved parent, coming in a close second to Worst Parent for Argus Ever (Monster Dear taking the reins on first place)

If anything she made it pretty clear this was just for fun, and it's not like she was tricking him, she never told him she loved him. There's also the fact that his mom was probably a mistress who had the bad luck of actually becoming pregnant. It's probably why she's so cruel to him, blame the children for no longer being 'treated well' and so on.

Well crap. Poor Argus.

I am so excited to see what's next.
flatbear 11th Oct 1:33 PM, 2016 edit delete reply
Based on what the young lady said on the previous page about having to consider her future, I reckon poor Argus is not in a position to inherit the throne. If he were to inherit or had a chance to inherit, the story might have gone quite differently. She might have tried to use him, convinced herself she loved him, or even genuinely fallen in love with him, because Argus would have represented security, and he would have been a young prince instead of an old king.

I feel sorry for them both. I understand her pragmatism, and also his outrage and heartbreak.

Sad for Argus...
Guest 12th Oct 12:54 AM, 2016 edit delete reply
From how Argus' Mother and Bowl Cut-Replacement Dad act, it can be assumed that Argus' mother was most likely a mistress of the King as well and one thing lead to another so Argus is most likely a bastard child. Either that or his dad sucks a** at being a dad and probably just pays child support occasionally to get Mom off his case.

I'm not sure there's a good way to break news like this, but if there is, that wasn't it.

When we see BeastMom on II.1.vii, she's yelling at Argus about how she "gave up everything for him." We know she's capable of terminating pregnancies, or at least has the knowledge to do so, but clearly she chose not to. It cost her something...significant, though. Her place in court? Society? The lifestyle to which she was accustomed?

We know that Argus's father was absent in his youth (with Bowlcut McStablehand a crap substitute), but his identity and their relationship is at least somewhat known to society (she's not surprised by "He's my father!"; also, "oh, I know who you are...it'd be difficult not to!", II.3.iv).

I'm going to agree with the Guest two comments above me: Argus is an illegitimate child of the king and BeastMom, possibly from when they themselves were young idiots in love. People know this, even though it's not clear if he's an acknowledged bastard--and if he is, it's doubtful he'll receive or inherit anything through it, so not much for this woman to look forward to there. In either case BeastMom became something of an social untouchable, presumably for having a child out of wedlock; she resents Argus for tearing her life apart and not appreciating what she gave up for him (in her mind, at least).

I dunno. Seems to me that this lady was "asked" to become the King's mistress and agreed for practical reasons and because she knows that the King won't take no for an answer. I think she DOES love Argus, but she's trying to let him down gently so he doesn't try to endanger himself by starting anything with his father.

Can someone explain to me how being a mistress is honorable? Because I can't grasp the fact that bedding a married man is a term worth calling honorable.
li 18th Oct 1:26 AM, 2016 edit delete reply
It's 'honorable' in the sense that it's going to be good for her reputation/social standing, not by our modern definition of honor. Back in the day, being a mistress to a wealthy man who promised to secure your future was a boon in a world where women didn't have any agency.

Ouch! Yeah, maybe they should have had a talk about how serious this relationship was going to be beforehand. Obviously he was way more into it than she was. And now she's going to be the mistress of the king. That will definitely give her privileges and power she otherwise wouldn't have had, and considering that the king doesn't seem inclined to abuse his lovers, it sounds like it would be a solid win for her. But it is still very, very gross that she's not only going to sleep with a married man, but with Argus's father (so he is a prince!) after sleeping with him. I can see why Argus is so upset. This must feel like a huge betrayal to him, even though it honestly seems like he'll be better off without her.
