So now on to the fun part of me explaining how I read this through the first time. My initial thought was that the "Master" they were talking about here was the man who would become the Beast. I now know that assumption was mistaken, with the heads of the sisters in the last panel verifying that the "Master" here is Beauty's father, who is...absent. I also assumed that the "Mistress" was dead, but looking at the wording again, it's entirely possible she simply disappeared (maybe she's a fae - maybe the sisters are all fae-babies. Excuse my blathering). Beauty is the only one who appears to be dying from the fever, so...yeah, could be that mother dearest just ran off into the night. Anyway, this is back when the family were wealthy. Fun times?

This is why I ought to keep quiet and not spoil things!

(Laughs.) Well you've been good about the no spoilers so far. Some of us just have very strong theories about what's going on already.

AbigailBrooks has a great point, about the mother possibly missing.

I love seeing Beauty's sisters in that final panel. I never quite realized it the last time I read this page that it was them. How must they have felt in that moment?

...In fact, I wonder if they ever noticed something that might be useful to tell Beauty later?

(And thus, a massive new headcanon is born! I don't dare share it here, however, for fear of new readers finding references to future chapters.)

Oh My! so the mother ran away, or at least it seems that way to the maids, I wonder if your version is closer to Villeneuve of Beaumont ;D might have explanations for the mother...
