Well, that explains it.

The Doodler
The implied suspense in the last panel is gonna be the death of me.

Really beautiful scene, by the way.

Then there is this* to consider...

Aww, I didn't notice the teeny flashback figures until the second time through-- how heartbreaking. For both of them, really. I know a kid who's acting up like that right now because of her parents' divorce and it's just so sad to watch.

I love this page so much. There's a great deal of information, which is lovely (and more info on the sisters, hurrah!), but the art here is wonderful. The Beast's expression in that second panel---his eyes! that touch of concern!---and the little Beauty-Virtue-Temperances, which are somehow poignant and adorable all at once. And that last panel and the way it frames not just Beauty and the Beast, but their respective sadness and shame/grief. Gorgeous, Megan.

It's no wonder she doesn't remember much... being hit in the head so many times.
Love the comic! ;)

Ah, /there/ is the death thing. I'm not convinced that she's right about that, but to all appearances, Elise might as well be dead. She certainly hasn't been around for many years. And...well, Beauty, your mother did vanish/die on the night you were deathly ill (I think), and then you miraculously got better...I mean, from a meta standpoint, you actually could be the reason why Elise is gone. At the very least, your birth...well, presuming the mother you spent your first few years was the real one and not a fake, your birth might have comprimised her health/sanity. She certainly didn't seem to be mentally stable on that ship. Not that I think that Beauty should have been blamed at all, but I think she has played a bigger role in Elise's fate than Beauty knows....

And...yep, they were in the merchant class. And their father's business collapsed. And...yeah, they were all very dependant on one another. There is genuine remorse and shame on the Beast's face, hearing all of this and seeing how sad their situation makes Beauty. It definitely brought down the mood, but considering the subject matter, that is not surprising. Well, on to the next page.

I agree with AbigailBrooks. There does seem to be an air of sincerity in the death comment in the comic, but perhaps it's only that Beauty's telling the truth as far as she and the others know it to be.
